Capacity building in climate science data and analyses
African cities are rapidly urbanizing while facing escalating climate risks such as flooding, heat stress, infrastructure gaps, and housing vulnerability. This session explores how people-centered smart city approaches can strengthen climate resilience and inclusive urban governance in African cities. Drawing from experiences in Lagos, Nairobi, and similar urban contexts, it highlights how digital innovation, urban data platforms, and participatory planning can translate climate science into practical urban solutions.
Building on the UN-Habitat People-Centered Smart Cities framework, the session examines how integrating inclusive planning, digital governance, and community participation can support evidence-based climate policy while addressing the disproportionate impacts of climate change on women and low-income communities. The discussion will identify scalable strategies for climate-responsive urban development across African cities and the Global South.
