The fossil fuel phase-out and climate adaptation is a historic opportunity to build equitable and inclusive economies, and cities are leading this transition. Yet, gaps in investment, policy, and skilled labor risk the delivery of climate targets on time.
Innovative C40 research projects that 3 to 6 million additional workers will be needed for planned climate interventions in transport, waste and construction in 25 cities alone; and highlights the positive socio economic impacts that addressing these shortages could generate.
Cities are delivering: with already over 21 million green jobs across 81 global cities, growing faster than overall employment, the highest concentrations of green jobs are in the sectors most influenced by local climate policy.
From Nairobi's school feeding programs to Quezon City's Good Green Jobs legislation on informal workers, there are hundreds of city examples pairing green job creation with workforce development and inclusion policies to address inequalities.
This session will show through research the opportunity to work with cities creating jobs that benefit people and the planet, address global challenges, and present replicable city solutions
